Structural and electronic properties are investigated in a fragmented-chain model for liquid tellurium and selenium. From the energy necessary to cut a bond, it is indicated that liquid Te is in fragmented chains while Se remains in long chains. Redistribution of electron density leads to configurations where the bonding energy in fragmented Te chains is smaller.
